ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) - A suburban Chicago man is being held on $5 million bail in the sexual assault of a 97-year-old woman at an assisted living facility.

Arlington Heights police said that 51-year-old Frank Mendez of Mount Prospect was charged Thursday with aggravated criminal sexual assault and criminal trespass. He appeared in bond court on Sunday.

Police allege that Mendez entered the woman’s room at the Church Creek Senior Living facility around 10:40 p.m. Aug. 20 by cutting a screen and entering through an unsecured window.

They say he dragged the woman into her bathroom, undressed her and beat her with his shoes. The woman’s medical alert sensor sounded during the attack, alerting a security guard.

The attacker escaped, but police recovered a fingerprint from the window and his shoes from the bathroom.
