CHATHAM, Va. (AP) - A bridge in Pittsylvania County has been named in honor of a civic leader who advocated for racial equality and spearheaded the creation of the county’s community action agency.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors requested that the Route 360 East bridge be named as the Irvin C. Burton, Sr. Memorial Bridge. The bridge carries Route 360 East over the Route 29 Bypass.

Burton was a farmer, landscaper and businessman. VDOT says in a news release that Burton played a pivotal role during integration of the county’s public schools. He also advocated hiring and appointing qualified African Americans to jobs throughout county government.

Burton died in 1998.
