NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) - While 300 is a number that’s on the minds of many as Natchez’s 300th birthday approaches, tricentennial officials say the number 17 is critical, too.

That’s how many custom, tricentennial license plates organizers need to sell before Oct. 2, The Natchez Democrat reports (https://bit.ly/1LVwiRy).

Natchez Tricentennial Executive Director Jennifer Ogden Combs said in order for the state to produce the commemorative license plates, 300 need to be ordered by the Friday deadline. So far, the commission has sold 283 plates, which feature a silhouette view of the Mississippi River Bridge and a small icon of a riverboat sailing into the sunset.

“That way they know there is enough interest to keep printing them,” Combs said.

The plates, Combs said, are significant for several reasons. “The design is meant to represent a connection that anyone who has every traveled through Natchez can have,” she said. It represents a connection to Natchez and it its history.”

Proceeds from the license plate sales will benefit tourism efforts in Natchez.

Combs said out of the tag’s $31 price ($32 if purchased online), $24 stays in Natchez and contributes to tourism and education efforts within the city.

“It’s such a great way to stay connected with Natchez and show your support,” she said. “Everyone, especially public officials, should have one.”

If organizers reach their sales goal by Friday, Combs said residents would be able purchase the custom license plate at the county tax collector’s office.

While the deadline is quickly approaching, Combs said she is not worried about meeting it.

“I’m not saying if we get to 300, I’m saying when,” Combs said.
