WILLIAMSON, W.Va. (AP) - Attorney Robert Carlton has been appointed as mayor of Williamson.

The Williamson Daily News (https://bit.ly/1QHeBc6 ) reports that the City Council appointed Carlton at its meeting on Thursday. The council also named Josh Ferrell as city attorney and Tammy Mosley as city clerk assistant.

Carlton replaces Steve Knopp, who stepped down as mayor because of health reasons. Carlton will serve as mayor until the next city election in May 2017.

Carlton and Ferrell were sworn in on Friday at a ceremony at City Hall.

Knopp and former city attorney Chris Younger announced their resignations at a City Council meeting on Aug. 27.
