NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a newborn baby girl with her umbilical cord still attached has been found dead on the ground outside a multi-story Bronx apartment building.

Officials say officers responded to the seven-floor apartment building Monday afternoon after someone called 911 to say an infant had fallen out of a window.

It wasn’t immediately clear how the newborn fell or was thrown.

Police say the newborn showed signs of trauma and is so far unidentified. There have been no arrests.

Officials say the baby was pronounced dead by first responders in the building’s rear concrete courtyard just after 2:30 p.m.

A secretary for the building’s landlord, P.R.V. Realty Corp., said police were investigating and declined further comment. She said 50 people live in the building.

This story has been corrected to show that the newborn is a girl, not a boy, per new information from police.
