EUNICE, La. (AP) - Authorities say a Eunice mother shot her two daughters, set fire to her home and then took her own life.

State Fire Marshal’s Office Deputy Chief Brant Thompson says authorities believe 39-year-old Carla Watford took the lives of 16-year-old Julia Watford and 9-year-old Jayia Watford Sunday before turning the gun on herself as the family’s home began burning.

Thompson, at a Monday news conference, said investigators found a .38-caliber pistol in the burned-out home and material they believe the mother used to ignite the fire.

The Advocate (https://bit.ly/1FydISP ) reports Police Chief Randy Fontenot read a statement from the woman’s family, saying that she was not a bad person and was a good mother. It’s unclear what led her to do the alleged actions despite a handwritten, multi-page document investigators found.
