FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Fairfax County police say an officer acted appropriately by using a stun gun during an arrest caught on video.

A clip of the Sept. 24 arrest appeared on social media over the weekend and prompted questions about appropriate use of force.

On Monday, police released a longer video of the incident and additional details.

They say the man, 35-year-old Elton Cansler of Alexandria, admitted stealing a pair of sunglasses. Police say Cansler was armed with a knife and kept reaching for it. They also say he refused orders to put his hands behind his back.

Cansler, who is black, is charged with assaulting a police officer and larceny.

Fairfax County Public Defender Todd Petit, whose office is representing Cansler, called the video disturbing but declined further comment.
