RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A former Wake County teacher will spend the rest of her life in prison without chance for parole for ending her unhappy marriage by killing her ailing husband.

Multiple media outlets reported jurors convicted Joanna Madonna on Monday for the 2013 stabbing death of her husband, Jose Perez. The 48-year-old Madonna admitted to stabbing her 64-year-old husband but claimed she acted in self-defense after a fight that erupted when she expressed her desire to get out of their marriage.

Prosecutors persuaded jurors that Madonna was guilty of first-degree murder by arguing Perez was little more to her than a sick, old man with no money who wouldn’t die.
