BUTTE, Mont. (AP) - An eight-day search for a Kalispell man who went missing during a bow hunting trip in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest ended over the weekend with the discovery of his body about a mile uphill from his pickup truck.

Beaverhead County Sheriff Frank Kluesner said the body of 53-year-old Robert Carter Jr. was found shortly before 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Big Hole National Battlefield area west of Wisdom.

Kluesner says the cause of death was not immediately obvious. An autopsy was planned.

Carter’s wife last heard from him on Sept. 16 and reported him missing on Sept. 19. Dozens of people joined the search that began the next day.

Carter worked for Plum Creek Timber Co. and was a pole vault coach at Whitefish High School for the past 13 years.
