DENVER (AP) - Investigators say the pilot of a small plane that crashed near Pagosa Springs, killing both people aboard, reported mechanical problems before slamming into the ground.

The Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office says witnesses on the ground reported seeing white smoke coming from the airplane just before the crash, and the pilot was banking hard to the left in a possible attempt to land on a nearby gravel road.

The Denver Post reports (https://goo.gl/871Ft2 ) the plane, a Beechcraft 35 Bonanza, crashed near U.S. Highway 84 about 7 miles south of Pagosa Springs on Friday morning.

Investigators have not released the names of either of the victims.
