PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Republican Party is criticizing the House speaker for delaying a House investigation into the state’s failed deal with video game company 38 Studios.

Chairman Brandon Bell on Monday condemned House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello for refusing last year to give the House Oversight Committee subpoena powers.

Bell says Mattiello, a Democrat, opposed a House investigation into the state’s $75 million deal with ex-Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling’s company. He says “House Democratic insiders” were behind the deal.

But Mattiello says state lawmakers need to put political rhetoric aside.

Mattiello announced Friday the House would hold hearings into what went wrong with the deal. He didn’t say whether he’d issue subpoenas.

Hundreds of documents in the state’s lawsuit against Schilling and others over the collapse of 38 Studios were unsealed last week.
