SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego police say officers shot and killed a 59-year-old man armed with a gun at an apartment.

Lt. Paul Rorrison says officers responded to the apartment in the San Ysidro neighborhood following a 911 hang-up call from that location early Monday.

Rorrison says when the door of the apartment opened, police were confronted with a man wielding a gun.

He says the officers retreated down a stairway and opened fire when the man followed and pointed the weapon at them.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/1WtdyQX) the man, whose name was not released, was declared dead at a hospital.

No officers were injured.
