EATONTON, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a Putnam County man has killed his wife and then himself.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills tells the Macon Telegraph (https://bit.ly/1KEF9JF ) that 47-year-old Richard B. Smith fatally shot his wife, 43-year-old Barbara A. Lawrence, early Sunday morning before killing then himself outside of the family’s home near Eatonton.

Deputies discovered the two bodies in the yard after receiving a call that Lawrence had not shown up for work at a nearby hospital.

The newspaper reports that Smith had been arrested on an assault charge in May, and he was subject to a protective order against contact with Lawrence beginning in July.

Sills says Lawrence had told authorities in August that Smith had called her, a violation of the protective order.
