Last week the local news team at a Chicago television station shockingly used a Nazi symbol used to identify and isolate Jews as their graphic for their coverage of the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

The badge used in the picture above the anchor’s left shoulder is the infamous Nazi badge of the Star of David with the word “Jude” in the middle, German for “Jew.” While the Nazis required all Jews to wear the identifying symbol, the picture WGN aired was of the badge on the blue and white striped concentration camp prisoner uniform.

In these days of unabashed Jew-hatred wrought by Islamist tyrants, and our own president and the Democratic Party fostering an increasingly hostile attitude toward Israel, an initial reaction that this might have been a deliberate act is understandable.

Yet, that wasn’t the case. WGN issued an apology in part noting, “Regrettably, we failed to recognize that the image was an offensive Nazi symbol. We are extremely embarrassed and we deeply apologize to our viewers and to the Jewish community for this mistake. Ignorance is not an excuse. Please know we are reviewing our in house policies and changes have already been made to make sure a hurtful oversight like this never happens again.”

I believe them, and it sounds like someone lost their job.

The truth of the matter, and frightening in its own context, is this debacle illustrates learned ignorance, the hallmark of liberal control of our public school system and the academy.

At first I was stunned, but then realized a 20-something right out of college, all sure of himself, was tasked with finding a graphic to represent the Jewish holiday. This likely educated and yet obviously ignorant individual probably took to Google to find his graphic option. I tried that myself and searched “Jewish Star of David,” and lo and behold, in the midst of the page were numerous images of the Nazi badge, listed simply as the “yellow” option in the midst of blue or gold versions. At a glance you had to know that one of those stars was not like the other.

The problem, of course, is no one in a newsroom serving one of the major cities in the United States knew the history or context of the image, and allowed it to be used.

This is the terrifying result of a public school system under union and other liberal control that has abandoned more than reading, writing and arithmetic, but scoffs at the teaching of basic and worldwide history.

Why? Because history exposes the deadly scourge of liberalism. History is a window into the human condition, and for the past 100 years, that condition has suffered under the menace of socialism, communism and fascism, all exclusively responsible for the genocides and mass destruction inflicted on humanity.

Liberals have always known their survival rests on individuals remaining unaware of their global history, a cancer of destruction, war, and the collapse of societies. Liberals love, as an example, to describe Hitler as a “conservative,” and the genocidal Third Reich as a “conservative” regime. You can only get away with that if you keep your audience ignorant.

Any discussion of the facts tells people the Nazi Party was the National Socialist Workers Party, which then requires a discussion about fascism, and it springing from the loins of Mussolini’s Socialist Party in Italy.

But what liberal high school teacher or leftwing college professor wants to have that discussion? After all, the truth always ruins the leftist narrative.

My alma mater is the University of Southern California. In a history class, the professor began to discuss the World War II internment camps here in the United States. As he continued to describe the camps as a racist mechanism to enslave the Japanese, I raised my hand and noted that German and Italian Americans were also interned in the same camps, but in different sections.

Well, I might as well told the room that I hoped every kitten on earth had just been drowned. The ‘lecturer’ was shocked, and said he was unaware of that fact, a somewhat surprising revelation for a history lecturer at one of the more important universities in the country.

At that point various students in the class, beginning to think I was some sort of malcontent, started shouting at me, as contradicting the narrative made me of course, a racist, too.

At some point, most everyone (but not all in the room) had been indoctrinated with the one aspect that could confirm the general liberal meme that America is racist and does racist things, i.e. America is bad, bad, bad.

The result of the American education system being controlled by liberals is one where history must become irrelevant. History, if it is taught, must be a history that is re-written, edited, or even fabricated.

Liberals and leftists around the world rely on ignorance. Islamists refuse schooling for girls for a reason. But if one must allow citizens to learn, liberals have a found a way to replace teaching with indoctrination and assuring the ignorance of their charges.

As we wonder how the United States got into our current condition, it’s not that the American people are suddenly stupid, or just don’t care. We are dealing with a couple of generations that have been deliberately kept from the knowledge required to know if they’re being lied to. This is why we must make sure to call out every lie a politician makes, counter those falsehoods, explain every truth, and never back down.
