MIDDLETON, Wis. (AP) - Gov. Scott Walker and State Patrol officials are honoring a rookie trooper killed in a shootout with a bank robber.

Trevor Casper was on his first solo patrol in March when he began tailing suspect Steven Timothy Snyder. Snyder suddenly stopped his vehicle in Fond du Lac and opened fire on Casper. The 21-year-old trooper and Snyder killed each other in the ensuing gunfight.

Snyder had robbed a Wausaukee bank as well as killed a man earlier in the day. Authorities later linked Snyder to nine bank robberies in multiple states.

Walker and patrol officials presented the patrol’s Medal of Valor and Purple Heart award to Casper’s family Monday during a ceremony in Middleton. The governor praised Casper and thanked his family for sharing him with the state of Wisconsin.
