SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a 23-year-old woman died in Santa Cruz County jail during drug detoxification.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Lt. Kelly Kent says Krista DeLuca died Tuesday, four days after being booked into county jail for being under the influence of drugs and five warrants that required court appearances.

Kent tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel (https://bit.ly/1FH3dfS) DeLuca was housed in the jail infirmary so she could be monitored during drug detoxification.

He says a correctional officer found DeLuca in “medical distress” early Tuesday. Medical staff tried to revive her and firefighters and paramedics responded. She was pronounced dead at the jail.

Seven inmates have died in Santa Cruz County jail since August 2012. The last inmate was a 65-year-old Watsonville woman, who died of natural causes in November, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
