BURLINGTON, Vermont (AP) - A 31-year-old Vermont man accused of sexually assaulting and impregnating an underage girl has pleaded not guilty.

WPTZ-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1KHi0pU ) a public defender entered not guilty pleas to two felony charges on behalf of Richard Danner, of Cabot, during an arraignment Monday afternoon in Washington County Superior Court in Burlington.

Danner faces a life sentence if convicted.

State police say the Department of Children and Families began investigating on Friday when the girl was hospitalized after having an unattended birth and having received no prenatal care. Authorities said detectives determined that Danner is the father.

Prosecutors say he has sexually assaulted her since she was 8-years-old.

Danner is being held without bail. A bail hearing is expected in the coming week in Barre.
