NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) - A man faces charges in connection with a pipe bomb blast in North Platte that injured a 24-year-old man.

Police say Daniel C. Smith faces charges of second-degree assault and using an explosive to commit a felony. Court records do not list an attorney.

Police say Smith was driving a vehicle in North Platte around Sept. 15 when he handed a lit, homemade explosive to a 24-year-old passenger to throw out of the vehicle’s window. The explosive went off in one of the man’s hands.

Smith is accused of driving the 24-year-old man to a hospital then driving away. The damaged vehicle was found later unoccupied.

Smith was in a detention center in relation to separate charges when an investigator interviewed him on Monday about the explosion.
