LOS ANGELES (AP) - The mother of a 15-year-old boy who was shot in the back and wounded by a Los Angeles police officer in February has sued the city.

The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday (https://lat.ms/1j0249l) that the mother of Jamar Nicholson filed a civil rights suit in federal court against the city and the officer who opened fire.

The suit says Nicholson and three friends were dancing in a South Los Angeles alley before school when plainclothes officers opened fire without identifying themselves.

Police have said officers saw someone point a gun at another person and an officer fired when they disobeyed orders to drop the weapon. The gun was a toy replica with an orange-tipped barrel. Nicholson was not the boy with the toy gun.

A police spokesman declined comment.
