ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The speaker of the New York state Assembly is continuing his tour of the state with stops in Sullivan County and Long Island.

Bronx Democrat Carl Heastie met with local leaders in the Sullivan County communities of Bethel, Mount Hope and Middletown, making stops at a local arts center, a bakery and other businesses. On Tuesday he is in Nassau County on Long Island, touring a middle school and a skateboard rink and meeting with local residents.

The speaker spent much of the summer visiting cities and towns around the state as part of an effort to better understand the challenges and opportunities facing each region and counter the perception that Albany’s leaders are too focused on New York City.

Heastie was elected speaker in February.
