“The Simpsons” is set to confirm in its 27th season what many avid watchers already suspected: Waylon Smithers Jr. is gay.

The loyal assistant to billionaire Montgomery Burns will finally come out to his boss and, officially, to viewers in a two-episode arc this March, executive producer Al Jean told TV Line.

“In Springfield now, most people know he’s gay, but obviously Burns doesn’t,” Mr. Jean said. “We deal with that in two episodes. … We actually do a lot with Smithers this year; he gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options.”

The show has dropped hints about Smithers’ sexuality in dozens of episodes, earning him the designation of “Burns-sexual” among writers. His utter infatuation with Mr. Burns is depicted in elaborate fantasy sequences, CNN reported.

According to the Simpsons Wiki website, Springfield is home to several gay characters, including Marge’s sister Patricia “Patty” Bouvier, who came out and expressed her desire to get married to a woman in a February 2005 episode.
