ATLANTA (AP) - An artistic director known for transforming the Atlanta Ballet into a respected dance organization is ending his tenure at the company.

Atlanta Ballet’s board of trustees chairman Allen W. Nelson announced Wednesday that John McFall will end his tenure after 21 years. McFall’s last day will be June 1, 2016.

McFall joined the Atlanta Ballet in 1994 as the organization’s third artistic director. He is credited with transforming the oldest ballet company in the nation from respected regional troupe to one of the most inventive dance organizations in the industry.

The Atlanta Ballet will honor McFall throughout the 2015-16 season with a series of special events. It’ll begin with a celebration around the 20th anniversary of “Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker,” the first production he created as artistic director.
