BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - The Boulder police officer who fatally shot a University of Colorado student after he confronted officers while wielding a hammer outside his apartment has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing in the case.

The Daily Camera reports (https://bit.ly/1NPnTVw ) Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garnett ruled that Dillon Garretson was justified in the shooting that left 22-year-old Sam Forgy dead July 27.

Garnett issued a letter saying Forgy had already injured one person with a knife when officers arrived. Forgy, who was naked and wielding a hammer, had ignored officers’ commands. Garretson fired at Forgy, killing the student.

A blood test later revealed Forgy had LSD in his system.

Garretson was placed on paid administrative leave following the shooting. A police spokesman says he should be reinstated within the next two weeks.
