SWANTON, Vt. (AP) - State police say a woman has been charged in connection with a motor vehicle accident that left two people dead in Swanton.

Authorities say 35-year-old Maria Carlson’s pickup truck struck a telephone pole before going through a yard, crossing into another traffic lane and colliding head-on with a car. The car’s driver, 68-year-old Diane Bohannon of Alburg, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, 67-year-old Robert Benjamin of Alburg, died at a local hospital. It happened around 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

State police say a witness estimated Carlson was traveling at 100 mph.

Carlson, who suffered injuries, is being held without bail at a hospital on a charge of gross/negligent operation of a motor vehicle with death resulting. It wasn’t immediately known if she’s represented by a lawyer.
