GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - The Greenwood police chief is requesting an extra $38,000 to cover overtime pay for officers.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (https://bit.ly/1JQxzbe ) that the Police Department is short-staffed.

Chief Ray Moore says officers are working overtime on their scheduled days off, not as extensions of their normal 12hour shifts.

Moore says the department is trying to recruit new eight new officers, with pay starting at $10.39 an hour. But, he says the task is difficult because few young people are interested in law-enforcement jobs.

Moore said the department does a background check, drug testing and psychological testing for each applicant.
