JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Supreme Court has issued an order to formally remove a chancery judge who already resigned.

Justices handed down the order Thursday.

Joe Dale Walker, of Monticello, resigned in May 2014 from a chancery judgeship in Jefferson Davis, Lawrence, Simpson and Smith counties. Five months later, he pleaded guilty to federal charges of witness tampering. In January, he was sentenced to five months in federal prison.

Walker was accused of instructing a federal grand jury witness to destroy documents and then lying to FBI agents. Prosecutors said the witness tampering occurred from August 2013 to March 2014.

Justices noted that a previous case allowed them to formally remove a judge who had already resigned because of misconduct.

The Supreme Court issued a separate order Thursday to permanently disbar Walker.
