SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Authorities say a man who was killed after a shootout with a highway trooper died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Layton Police Sgt. Riley Richins said Thursday that the medical examiner’s office determined 21-year-old Drew Moyer fatally shot himself on Aug. 28. Richins declined to say if the autopsy showed whether Moyer was shot by police in the exchange of gunfire.

The incident occurred in the early morning in Layton near Hill Air Force Base when Moyer drove into an off-limits construction zone. Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Paul Kotter approached Moyer’s car and a shootout ensued.

Kotter was shot three times but survived, in part because he was wearing a bullet proof vest.

Moyer fled in his car before smashing into a parked semi-trailer in the same construction zone. Troopers found him dead in his car.
