TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A Florida Panhandle prisoner with a history of attacking other inmates faces a possible death sentence for fatally beating his cellmate.

Without a deal in place, 35-year-old Shawn Rogers pleaded guilty Wednesday to first-degree murder and kidnapping with intent to do bodily harm. A Santa Rosa County judge will decide Rogers’ fate following a penalty phase scheduled to begin Oct. 28.

Authorities say Ricky D. Martin was found lying in a pool of blood with his hands and feet bound in his cell at Santa Rosa Correctional Institution in March 2012. He was taken to a Pensacola hospital, where he died a week later.

The Pensacola News Journal (https://goo.gl/GYtlPO ) reports that Rogers is already serving a life sentence for armed robbery and battery convictions in Volusia County. Officials say Rogers had an extensive history of violence, including multiple assaults on other inmates.
