CLAVERACK, N.Y. (AP) - A 62-year-old upstate New York woman has pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals for shooting her neighbor’s dog to death.

Linda DeRosa of Claverack entered her guilty plea Wednesday in Columbia County Court. Judge Jonathan Nichols will sentence her to six months in jail and five years’ probation on Oct. 28.

DeRosa shot Poppy, a 3-year-old Great Pyrenees/Newfoundland mix, with a .22-caliber rifle in June. Poppy’s family found the dog dead on their front lawn.

Police said DeRosa told investigators she shot Poppy because she was barking.

As part of her plea deal, DeRosa agreed to pay $10,000 to the dog’s owners and move away from them.
