GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) - A coroner says a knife-wielding slaying suspect died of “suicide by cop” when he was shot by a state trooper at a western Pennsylvania apartment complex.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (https://bit.ly/1LPdgAN ) reports Westmoreland County Coroner Ken Bacha (BATCH’-ah) announced that finding Wednesday.

Bacha held an inquest in July into the death of 41-year-old Rodney Golden, of Greensburg.

Golden was fatally shot during an altercation with state police and three local departments at Hempfield Towers on Jan. 19, 2014.

That’s when police say Golden slit the throat of his ex-girlfriend, 56-year-old resident Anita Sobel, at the apartment complex for seniors and the disabled about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh.

State Trooper Brian Lumsden has testified he fired after police couldn’t subdue Golden with stun guns and he continued to advance at them with the bloody knife.
