MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities say a 30-year-old man killed a woman whose body was found in the trunk of an SUV near a vacant house north of Memphis.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chip Washington said Wednesday that Carlos A. Payton has been charged with first-degree murder in the strangulation of 23-year-old Pryncess Jackson.

Investigators say they found Jackson’s body in the back of the vehicle Tuesday. According to the sheriff’s office, Payton said he was at a relative’s home when he and his girlfriend began arguing and he choked her to death.

The sheriff’s office says Payton put her body in the SUV’s trunk, drove to the rear of the home, left the vehicle there and walked home with his young daughter.

Court records do not show if Payton has a lawyer.
