MIAMI (AP) - A driver has died and eight students were critically injured when a van crashed outside a Little Havana charter school.

Police said the students from Green Springs High School were heading to lunch Wednesday when their van crashed into a car that was trying to make a left turn. The van flipped, damaging several nearby parked cars.

“It’s a major tragedy,” Miami police Lt. Freddie Cruz said.

The Miami Herald (https://tinyurl.com/polnjwp ) reports the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Cruz said two students were critically injured but the rest were taken to the hospital for observation.

Police are looking into whether speed was a factor in the crash.
