PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Newly released FBI figures suggest that crime in Providence dropped to its lowest point in nearly three decades last year.

WPRI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1jzvStl ) there were 927 violent crimes and 6,827 property crimes in the city last year. That amounts to a 15 percent decrease in overall crime from 2013.

Of six New England cities similar in size to Providence, only Worcester saw an increase in total violent crimes last year. Total property crimes ticked up in the Connecticut cities of Hartford and Stamford.

Violent crime was down less than 1 percent across the country last year. The report says property crime dipped about 4 percent from 2013 to 2014. That’s the 12th consecutive year crime dropped nationally.
