SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) - A former psychiatric technician has been sentenced to seven years in prison for having unlawful sexual contact with a disabled resident at the Sonoma Developmental Center.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports (https://bit.ly/1L4f08w) Judge Jamie Thistlethwaite sentenced 63-year-old Rex Bradford Salyer to slightly more than half of the 12 years possible, noting his age, lack of criminal record and readiness to take responsibility.

Salyer had pleaded no contest to unlawful sex with a 35-year-old resident, who asked for a 12-year sentence. She told the court Salyer betrayed her trust.

Thistlethwaite was willing to sentence Salyer to three years. She later learned the victim was recovering from self-inflicted wounds at the time of one assault and that the defendant had Viagra with him at work when he was arrested.
