WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - The head of Waterloo’s sewage services has been fired.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1QKYMB4 ) that Larry Smith was relieved of his duties on Tuesday by Mayor Buck Clark.

The mayor won’t discuss reasons for Smith’s firing. The 67-year-old Smith says he was told he could resign or be fired, and he chose firing.

Smith told the newspaper that Clark “told me he didn’t think I was doing my job. But I really don’t know what job I wasn’t doing.”

A news release from city clerk and personnel director Suzy Schares says the city wishes Smith “the best of luck in future endeavors and thanks him for his years of service. A nationwide search will begin immediately for his replacement.”

Smith had worked for the city since 1989.
