LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles County supervisors have voted to consolidate three health-related departments into a single agency that deals with physical health, mental health and broader public health issues.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/1QKsypF ) that the supervisors voted Tuesday in a move that is intended to create a more efficient system.

The three departments will maintain their own budgets and directors under the larger umbrella organization in the new model in hopes of not neglecting mental health in favor of the hospital system.

The new health agency will be tasked with a wide range of responsibilities, including connecting homeless patients to housing programs, improving health services for foster children, reducing overcrowding in psychiatric emergency departments at county hospitals and managing a diversion program to keep mentally ill people out of jail.
