HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The mother of a 4-year-old girl found wandering the streets of Hartford alone has been held on $50,000 bail.

The Hartford Courant (https://cour.at/1KRxSTJ ) reports that 22-year-old Shi’day Nicks appeared in court Wednesday on charges of risk of injury to a minor, reckless endangerment and leaving a child under 12 unsupervised.

Police say a passer-by reported seeing the girl walking along Collins Street by herself around 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Responding officers determined the girl’s address and brought her home. Deputy Chief Brian Foley says officers found the home’s door open.

The girl, who told police that she dressed herself that morning, has been turned over to the state Department of Children and Families.

Shi’day Nicks’ father, Anthony Nicks of Springfield, Massachusetts, said the incident is out of character for his daughter.
