JOHNSTON, R.I. (AP) - Officials say a scrap yard in Rhode Island filled with smoke as crews battled a rapidly spreading fire.

Johnston Fire Chief Tim McLaughlin says crews responded to the Full Circle Recycling center in Johnston Tuesday afternoon and discovered the fire was more fully involved than expected.

He says the building the yard was filled with combustible materials, including cardboard and paper. There was only one hydrant in the area too, further complicating matters, and a tanker had to be brought in.

No one was inside when the fire began. Firefighters do not know how or where the blaze started.

The cause remains under investigation.
