BLUFFTON, S.C. (AP) - Some volunteers have removed an abandoned “party dock” from a Beaufort County river.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported (https://bit.ly/1h9PZN8 ) that Bluffton Town Councilman Larry Toomer and some volunteers removed the old dock late Monday.

The dock has been a popular gathering spot for young people on a sandbar in the May River. But some local residents say the old dock was a dangerous eyesore.

Some volunteers took the dock apart Tuesday and carried it to a landfill.

Alan Ulmer says the move makes the river safer and clean.

The Department of Natural Resources says because the dock was not a registered vessel the agency could not remove the dock from the river.
