NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The principal of South Lafourche High School confirms that a freshman football player was seriously injured during practice Tuesday.

Gaye Cheramie says she can say only that Trevor Toups is getting excellent medical treatment and is responding to commands and moving all of his extremities.

She says everyone at the school is praying for Toups and his family, and his family has requested privacy.

The Courier (https://bit.ly/1QLrZfh ) reports that he’s the son of Tessie and Toby Toups of Larose.

Cheramie says the freshman team’s game Wednesday against South Terrebonne was canceled “out of respect for Trevor, his family, and the high emotions of his teammates.”
