CLINTON, N.C. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a Clinton man in connection with the death of a Sampson County man who was fatally shot outside of his home.

Clinton police told local media Tuesday that 19-year-old Scileek P. Washington was charged Tuesday at the Sampson County Courthouse with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Officers say they found 56-year-old Benjamin Cunningham unresponsive in the side yard of his Clinton home on the evening of Sept. 16. He later died at the scene.

Police Chief Jay Tilley has previously said Cunningham’s death was not random and that Cunningham knew his killer.

The Sampson County Medical Examiners ruled that Cunningham died as a result of a single gunshot wound.

It is unclear whether Washington has an attorney to comment on the charges.
