BIG STONE GAP, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy is receiving a $50,000 grant to provide emergency preparedness training to miners.

The funding is through the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s Brookwood-Sago Grants program. In all, $1 million is headed to organizations nationwide that provide education training within the mining industry.

Other recipients include the Colorado School of Mines, Penn State and the United Mine Workers of America, among others.

The grant program is named in remembrance of 13 men who died in mining explosions in Alabama and at the Sago Mine in West Virginia.
