YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - Voters in Yankton County have resoundingly defeated a proposed property tax increase to help fund road and bridge repairs.

The Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan reports (https://bit.ly/1jyrlY8 ) that preliminary results from Tuesday’s election show 70 percent of the 3,427 voters opposed the measure.

The levy would have hiked taxes on both non-agricultural property and farmland, raising an additional $1.5 million for improvements to roads and bridges.

County commissioners in July adopted the levy but opponents referred it to a public vote through a petition drive
