CASTLETON, Vt. (AP) - A rare heron sighting is drawing birdwatchers to Bomoseen State Park in Castleton.

The yellow-crowned night heron - which lives in Florida and breeds as far north as North Carolina - was spotted in the park numerous times last month.

The Rutland Herald (https://bit.ly/1JEWXnx ) reports the bird is named for the coloring on its head and because it’s most frequently seen in the late evening.

A conservation biologist with the Vermont Audubon Society says this one is a young bird that probably hatched this year so to have it in Vermont is “pretty rare.”
