LAS VEGAS (AP) - Authorities have identified the police officer in a Friday shooting where another officer was wounded with an AK-47 assault rifle.

Las Vegas police say 35-year-old Malik Grego-Smith has been with the department since August 2008 and is now on paid leave pending an investigation.

Grego-Smith was with Officer Jeremy Robertson in the Friday morning shootout after they responded to a backyard prowler call.

Police said the officers were led through a house to the backyard, where 20-year-old Clemon Hudson and 24-year-old Steven Turner immediately fired shots at the officers.

Robertson was hospitalized for surgery and expected to make a full recovery.

The suspects were hurt and now face attempted murder, burglary and weapons charges.

Turner was shot by police in the lower leg and Hudson was bitten by a K9.
