BRICK, N.J. (AP) - Officials say six students at a southern New Jersey Catholic school suffered heat exhaustion during an outdoor school ceremony.

The Asbury Park Press (https://on.app.com/1EN4wcY ) reports that Saint Dominic’s 50th anniversary opening day ceremony was cut short after students at the school in Brick started to get dizzy from the heat at around 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Principal Carol Bathmann confirmed that six students needed treatment. She said others were directed to a makeshift cooling station inside the school as a precaution.

The National Weather Service reports that temperatures had risen into the 80s and 90s in the area on Tuesday morning, with the heat index expected to be near 100 degrees.
