THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - BP settlement dollars could be used to give bonuses to Lafourche Parish public school teachers, janitors and bus drivers.

The Daily Comet reports (https://bit.ly/1Nfvon5) the school board is scheduled to vote Wednesday on a proposal that would give $1,000 to every teacher and $500 to support personnel from the $8.7 million received in the settlement with BP over the 2010 Gulf oil spill.

The settlement is part of the $18.7 billion BP agreed to pay last week to Louisiana, four other states and the federal government to settle lawsuits filed in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon disaster, which killed 11 and unleashed one of the largest oil spills in history.

Two other proposals would allocate $1.2 million to the information technology department and $383,000 to repair tennis courts.
