By Associated Press - Tuesday, September 8, 2015

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Salt Lake Tribune, The Spectrum of St. George and the Moscow-Pullman Daily News in Moscow, Idaho were named the winners Tuesday in the general excellence category of the Utah Idaho Spokane Associated Press Association’s annual news contest.

Erin Alberty and the staff of The Salt Lake Tribune won the William H. Cowles III Memorial Award for public service reporting for their coverage of police use of deadly force in Utah. Alberty also won a top award for investigative reporting for reviewing media reports, crime statistics and records from courts and medical examiners to show that more Utah residents have been killed by police than gang members, drug dealers or child abuse over five years.

Newspapers competed in three size divisions: for newspapers over 50,000 circulation; papers of 10,000 to 50,000 circulation; and papers under 10,000 circulation.
