HOBBS, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State Police are investigating a fatal shooting involving Hobbs police officers.

They say officers responded to a 911 call early Monday at a convenience store in Hobbs.

They met with a 42-year-old woman who told police that she allegedly had been battered by her husband at their home and he had a shotgun.

Police say officers went to the couple’s house and 42-year-old William Verrett was in possession of a shotgun.

They say shots were fired, Verrett was struck several times and was declared dead at the scene.

Details weren’t released Tuesday, but state police say the shooting is being investigated by their investigations bureau.
