EL MONTE, Calif. (AP) - Police have wounded a man they say held a knife to his wife’s throat outside a burning El Monte home where another woman was fatally stabbed.

The fire was reported Wednesday morning.

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune (https://bit.ly/1gacBML ) says arriving police saw a man outside holding a knife to the throat of a woman believed to be his wife.

Sheriff’s Lt. Eddie Hernandez says the man was shot after refusing to drop the weapon. He and the woman - who was burned over 90 percent of her body - are in critical condition.

A woman in her 70s was found stabbed inside the home and pronounced dead at a hospital.

A 48-year-old man with a stab wound in his arm was found down the street. He’s in stable condition.
